People’s Food Co-op SNAP Matching Donation Drive

People’s Coop thinks that having access to healthy food that you can trust is super important. And it’s something that seems very relevant for our community to keep in mind this holiday. Every week People’s gives away over $300 in funds to folks using their EBT cards at thier Farmers’ Market.

People's coop snap chipsAccording to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s last report, 15 percent of Oregon families experienced food insecurity in 2013. To help provide access to food, Oregon offers the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Nearly 20 percent of Oregonians use the SNAP program, the highest in the nation according to a Census Bureau report.

The need for food assistance is prevalent throughout Oregon, including  in Southeast Portland.

People’s Food Co-op recognizes this huge need for access to healthy food in the local community. People’s has a weekly Farmers’ Market where they match up to five dollars for those using an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card to help get food into the hands of those that need it. “We understand that many families don’t have the same access to healthy food,” said Ashley Todd, People’s Farmers’ Market Coordinator. “Every week about 80 folks use an EBT card at our market and receive extra funds that go directly back to the farmers and producers who bring their goods to market.”

This program, called SNAP Matching, is funded entirely by People’s. To keep the program running, People’s is asking for donations this holiday season. Other local Southeast businesses such as Mirador Kitchen & Home, Sip Juice Cart, Canteen, Mississippi Studios, Revolution Hall and North St. Bags have joined in this mission to give food to those that need it by offering prizes for anyone who makes a donation

Here’s how you can help:

  • The SNAP Matching Drive runs from December 15 and January 15, 2016.
  • Make a donation on People’s website at or in store at the register.
  • After you donate, get a raffle ticket from a co-op cashier. Fill out the ticket and you’ll be entered to win restaurant gift cards, concert tickets and homegood prizes.

This is a great way to give this winter season. Even more importantly, your contribution goes directly to members of the community.
