Bottled Water: A Shrinking Market

Some cities have gone as far as outlawing the sale of bottled water. Some states charge a refund deposit on water bottles in an effort to
corral the burgeoning number of discarded one-use water bottles.

Here are some facts from TwilightEarth.com:

  • Bottled water costs up to 4,000 times more than tap water.
  • Bottled water is essentially tap water
  • Bottled water does not fall under FDA guidelines, and often has more mercury and other pollutants in it than public utility water.
  • 80% of water bottles end up in landfills, streams and the environment.
  • It takes 5 bottles of water to create the plastic for 1 water bottle.

The good news is that sales of bottled water are reportedly down 9%.

Why buy bottled water when nearly every householder in the United States has a clean source that can be transported in a reusable container?

I agree wholeheartedly about bottled water. I do. But there are several inherent dangers to trusting tap as our one source of water – which will hopefully improve. Because, let's get honest , who wants to not be able to drink free water? It's all about minimizing our footprint, and being safe at the same time. Babysteps.

I know there are companies out there who are strongly against bottled water, and because of that – they are boxing water = with something like over 60% post-consumer recycled materials. I just heard about this one, PLANT IT WATER.

At least they give back for what they use! For each bottle sold, they donate to two charities – planting a tree with each unit sold, and supporting an international water fund.
